Our Resources

Navigating the "NYSSLS Rollout Highway" can be a little disorienting... we've developed a road map to help you along the way.

We'd love for you to use our resources and share them with others. Use them as you wish but please continue to credit the person(s) responsible for creating the document.

Lesson Realignment Tool

This realign tool helps teachers "flip" the learning in their lesson cycles so that students are the ones gathering evidence, incorporating reasoning, and communicating their ideas.

Lesson Performance Expectations - 3D Chart.pptx

Lesson Performance Expectations in 3D

Use this template to find the 3-dimensional nature of each performance expectation.

3D Lesson Planning Tool

Use this template to plan for the 3-dimensional nature of your next lesson. In the attached file, a full example lesson follows the blank template.

Thinking LIke a Scientist.pdf

Student Guide to 3D Thinking

Use this guide with students as a reference to the 3-dimensions. Students can refer back to the guide when asking questions, constructing explanations, etc.

As with all of our student guides, printing is best done on 11x17 paper, folded, punched, and used in a 3-ring binder.

3D Experimental Design Sheet

Use this template with students during the experimental design / inquiry process, to replace or supplement lab reports, or modify as a lab template.

Claim, Evidence, Reasoning

Use claim, evidence, reasoning with students to summarize their learning - the first link below utilizes a rubric from NSTA. The second link is a graphic organizer that parallels how students write about text evidence when analyzing a piece of literature in ELA.

Inquiry Cycle Summary Page

Use this summary sheet with students throughout the Inquiry Cycle to help them organize their 3-dimensional thinking. Students can use the spaces for writing and/or modeling. For more about the 3-D Inquiry cycle, see Paul Andersen's 5 steps.

Storyline Templates

The full NYSSLS / NGSS Storyline Template allows you to unpack an entire performance expectation for your course and outline how the unit (or sub-unit) will unfold. This is a great tool for planning the phenomena and driving questions that will anchor your unit as well as each individual lesson. The file contains two example storylines to get you started.
